Former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney is to perform at the Grammys for the first time ever when music's highest awards are handed out next week, organisers said.

The 63-year-old singer, composer and music producer -- who has won 13 Grammy Awards in his four decade career -- has signed on to do a musical act during the awards show that will be held in Los Angeles on February 8.

The pop and rock legend is nominated for three Grammys this year: Album Of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for "Chaos And Creation In The Backyard" and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for ""Fine Line".

McCartney was honoured with the Recording Academy's prestigious lifetime achievement award in 1990.

McCartney, one of the two surviving members of the "Fab Four" who changed the course of pop music in the 1960s, will be introduced by US television star Ellen DeGeneres, according to the Recording Academy.

Other star Grammy Awards presenters added to the list on Thursday included seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong, Grammy-winning singer Bonnie Raitt, and movie star and singer Jennifer Love Hewitt.

McCartney joins previously announced performers including Mariah Carey, John Legend and Kanye West -- each of whom go into this year's show armed with eight nominations --- the queen of pop Madonna, who will perform with the "virtual" group Gorillaz, and "The Boss" Bruce Springsteen.

Also doing turns on stage at the Staples Center will be Irish rockers U2, singer Mary J Blige, Coldplay, Sugarland, Jamie Foxx, Faith Hill and Keith Urban, and Christina Aguilera and Herbie Hancock.

The show will feature an all-star tribute to Sly And The Family Stone starring acts that include Maroon 5, will.i.am of The Black Eyed Peas, Robert Randolph, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith and British singer Joss Stone.
