Bo Yi is a traditional minister of Shun and Yu. The Canon of Shun in the Book of Documents (Shangshu) has Shun appoint Yi as forester, in charge of the plants and creatures. The Annals of Qin in the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji) tells of Da Fei, who helped Yu control the waters and tamed birds and beasts for Shun, was called Baiyi and received the surname Ying; the Han History treatise on geography names the Qin ancestor Baiyi as Shun's keeper of plants and creatures, and later writers take Da Fei and Baiyi to be Bo Yi, whom Qin and Zhao both claimed as ancestor. The Annals of Xia says that after the mourning for Yu Yi yielded to Yu's son Qi and withdrew to Mount Ji, and the lords went to Qi. The Jin History reports that the Jizhong bamboo texts said Yi tried to take Qi's throne and Qi killed him.
