A busy market street under tiled roofs: steaming noodle stalls and a cloth stall hung with bolts on the left, a seated figure before a painted screen under a red umbrella with listeners on benches on the right, children running with hoops, and blank wooden signboards under the eaves.
This group holds commoners: people with no office or title who are remembered because of an event, a piece of writing or an experience that entered the histories and literature, such as townspeople, villagers and the wives and relatives of famous men. Their names survive mostly in memorial inscriptions, biographies and notebooks, and they show how ordinary people lived in different periods.
