Chen Chun
Ming painter and calligrapher from Suzhou, a pupil of Wen Zhengming, whose free ink flowers paired him with Xu Wei
A desk holds an unrolled sheet bearing three bold black ink strokes, with a rack of many brushes above it, a stone ink slab and ink stick, a porcelain bowl, a red lacquer box, a dish of red seal paste and a paperweight; a small seated figure shows through a round window onto bamboo.
Also known as Zi Daofu · Later styled Fufu · Hao Baiyang Shanren
Chen Chun, courtesy name Daofu, by which he was later known, and later Fufu, sobriquet Baiyang Shanren, came from Changzhou county in Suzhou. He studied painting and calligraphy with Wen Zhengming as a young man and then went his own way, painting flowers in free ink washes; with the later Xu Wei he is paired as 'Qingteng and Baiyang'. He wrote running and cursive script, his late cursive especially loose, and his cursive copy of the Nineteen Old Poems survives. He died in 1544 aged sixty-one.
