Lobsang Chokyi Gyaltsen was born in Tsang in 1570 and became a monk at thirteen. In 1601 he was enthroned as the sixteenth abbot of Tashilhunpo, which he enlarged and whose discipline he reformed, and he gave vows to the Fourth and Fifth Dalai Lamas; in 1617 the monastery founded its tantric college. In 1645 Gushi Khan gave him the title Panchen Bogdo, the origin of the Panchen line. According to the heritage record of Tashilhunpo's cham, in 1647 he drew on Samye's dance of the Eight Names of Padmasambhava to set an exorcism rite for the protector deity Chibala and instituted the Gudo cham performed each year on the twenty-ninth day of the twelfth Tibetan month, forerunner of today's Semo Chenmo cham. He died in 1662.
