Tenpai Nyima, the Seventh Panchen Lama, was born in 1782 (Water Tiger year) to a minor noble family in Panam, Tsang, and recognised as the reincarnation of the Sixth Panchen Lama, residing at Tashilhunpo Monastery. In 1844-45 he briefly served as regent in Lhasa. According to the national intangible heritage listing, after taking part in ceremonies in Lhasa he built the Dechen Kelsang Palace at Tashilhunpo and, borrowing passages from the cham of monasteries such as Lamo, Tsel Gungtang and Lhodrak, formally established the Semo Chenmo cham performed by the monks of the Tsegon college, which continues today. He died in 1853.
