In a study at night, a desk holds a brush pot, a porcelain vase with a plum branch, a lit red lantern, a folded fan and an unrolled blank scroll, with no one seated there, while through a round window the moon rises over a lake with a sailboat.

Wang Song, wife of Liu Xun, was a woman of Cao Wei in the Three Kingdoms and the wife of the General Who Pacifies the Barbarians, Liu Xun; her dates are unknown. The Jade Terrace anthology preserves two Miscellaneous Poems by her with a preface, which tells how Liu Xun took a new love and put her aside for having no son, and the poems voice her grief at parting. Later readers have found them plain and moving, among the earlier pentasyllabic poems by a woman from the Han-Wei transition, and she is catalogued by her husband's name.
