Liu Xiaoyi
Liang literary man from Pengcheng, brother of Liu Xiaochuo, who rose to Censor-in-Chief and Minister of Justice; his verse is in the Yutai Xinyong.
In a study at night, a desk holds a brush pot, a porcelain vase with a plum branch, a lit red lantern, a folded fan and an unrolled blank scroll, with no one seated there, while through a round window the moon rises over a lake with a sailboat.
Also known as Originally named Qian
Liu Xiaoyi, originally named Qian, was a native of Pengcheng, born in 484. He served under Xiao Dan and Xiao Gang, and held posts including magistrate of Jiankang, Secretariat Gentleman, Censor-in-Chief and Minister of Justice, with provincial posts at Linhai and Yuzhang. His brother Liu Xiaochuo counted him among the family's 'three brushes, six poems'. By imperial order he wrote the Yongzhou Pingdeng Jinxiang Bei. Under pressure from Hou Jing's rebellion he died in 550; a twenty-scroll collection circulated in his day but is lost.
