Agronomist who found six male-sterile rice plants in the fields of Anjiang Agricultural School in 1964 and 1965, and in October 1973 announced that the three lines of indica hybrid rice had been matched.

Yuan Longping was born in Beiping in 1930, graduated from Southwest Agricultural College in 1953 and was an agronomist. In 1964 and 1965 he examined large numbers of rice ears one by one in the fields of Anjiang Agricultural School in Hunan and found six male-sterile plants; in 1966 he published The Male Sterility of Rice in issue 4 of Kexue Tongbao, setting out the idea of using hybrid vigour in rice through three lines. In the autumn of 1970 his assistant found a male-sterile wild rice plant on Hainan, and the seed bred from it was named Yeba. In the spring of 1971 Hunan formed a cooperation group for hybrid rice research, and in October 1973, at the second national meeting on hybrid rice research cooperation, he announced that the three lines of indica hybrid rice had been matched. He later worked at the Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences and in his lifetime was director of the National Hybrid Rice Engineering Technology Research Center and Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center.
