Masters known for carving, lacquer, ceramics, weaving and embroidery
45people
A craft workshop centres on a potter's wheel holding a tall celadon vase, amid racks of red lacquer boxes, an embroidery frame with a floral design, shelves of celadon ware, carved wooden panels and stacked logs, while one craftsman works at a table and another stands at a glowing kiln.
Master craftsmen are people known for handwork such as carving, lacquer, ceramics, weaving, embroidery and inkmaking, including famous makers of lacquerware, Yixing teapots, carved bamboo, wood, ivory and horn, and silk tapestry and embroidery. They are remembered mostly through single works and teaching lines, recorded in notebooks, gazetteers and surviving objects. They differ from engineers in making crafted objects rather than large construction, and from sculptors in making objects and their carved decoration rather than figures.
