Zhu Ying
Ming bamboo carver of Jiading, son of Zhu He and father of Zhu Sansong, the second generation of the Jiading school
A craft workshop centres on a potter's wheel holding a tall celadon vase, amid racks of red lacquer boxes, an embroidery frame with a floral design, shelves of celadon ware, carved wooden panels and stacked logs, while one craftsman works at a table and another stands at a glowing kiln.
Also known as Zi Qingfu · Hao Xiaosong
Zhu Ying, courtesy name Qingfu and art name Xiaosong, came from Jiading near present-day Shanghai. The son of the bamboo carver Zhu He and father of Zhu Sansong, he is the middle generation of the Three Zhus of Jiading and was said to have surpassed his father. He also wrote small seal and running-cursive script and painted, and his carving favoured Buddhist and Daoist immortals and landscapes with figures. The Shanghai Museum's incense cylinder showing Liu Chen and Ruan Zhao entering the Tiantai Mountains, signed Zhu Ying and Xiaosong, is a reference piece for early Jiading carving, and the Palace Museum in Beijing holds his bamboo-root Buddha's hand citron signed Xiaosong.
