Listening to the Pines
One of A Bing's three surviving erhu pieces
At dusk in a canal town, an old man with a cloth bound over his eyes sits on stone steps by the water, bowing an erhu. Lanterns glow under the eaves behind him, and a stone arch bridge is reflected in the canal.
Introduction
An erhu solo by Hua Yanjun, recorded in 1950 at the same session as Erquan yingyue.
Ting song is an erhu solo composed by Hua Yanjun, the Wuxi street musician known as A Bing, around the early 1930s. On the evening of 2 September 1950, Yang Yinliu and Cao Anhe recorded A Bing in Wuxi, taking down this piece at the same session as Erquan yingyue and Hanchunfeng qu. The instrument he played had been borrowed, and he practised for three days before the recording began. The sessions preserved three erhu pieces and three pipa pieces in all. Ting song therefore stands with Erquan yingyue and Hanchunfeng qu as one of the three erhu works A Bing left behind.
