The Flaming Mountain
The Flaming Mountain on strings
On a lantern-lit stage before a temple at night, two puppeteers above a painted backdrop work the strings of a painted-face warrior and a lady in flowing robes. Musicians beat a drum and gong at right as villagers watch from below.
Introduction
Created by the Quanzhou Puppet Troupe from Journey to the West; nearly four thousand shows at home and abroad
The Flaming Mountain is a mythological play for string marionettes by the Quanzhou Puppet Troupe, drawn from Journey to the West. The troupe staged it in the late 1970s; the script is credited to Huang Xijun, with veteran puppeteers including Huang Yique as artistic advisers. In 1979 it won a first prize at a national performance festival held by the Ministry of Culture, and it later received the ministry's award for outstanding repertoire. Quanzhou marionettes carry as many as thirty strings or more at their key joints, and the singing follows the local puppet music, a body of over three hundred tunes. The play has now been given close to four thousand performances in China and abroad.
