Spirit of the Peacock
Yang Liping's breakthrough solo
In a clearing beside a white temple wall and golden pagodas, a dancer in a golden crown and peacock-feather wings moves lightly. Musicians in white headcloths play a long drum and a large gong, with a bamboo house behind a leafy tree.
Introduction
A solo she made and danced in 1986, winning first prize for choreography at the second national competition
Spirit of the Peacock is a solo created and danced by Yang Liping in 1986, and it is the piece that made her name. That year it won the first prize for choreography and first place for performance at the Second National Dance Competition. At the closing ceremony of the Eleventh Asian Games in Beijing in 1990, Yang led a performance of the dance. In December 1994 the solo received a gold award as a classic Chinese dance work of the twentieth century. Among her peacock works it follows the dance drama The Peacock Princess, in which she starred in 1979, and was later followed by Love of the Peacock and the 2012 dance drama The Peacock. When she toured Taiwan in 2015 the solo was still on her programme.
