Laundry Song
A washing scene told in song and dance
On a meadow between snow peaks and a river valley, dancers in Tibetan robes with long sleeves step in a circle. Prayer flags stand at left, while tents and horses are seen at right.
Introduction
A Tibetan-style song and dance staged in 1964, mixing solo, chorus and spoken lines
Laundry Song is a Tibetan-style song and dance created in 1964, choreographed by Li Junchen with music by Luo Nianyi and staged by the song and dance troupe of the Tibet Military Region. Its thread is a day of washing clothes, with comic exchanges between young Tibetan women such as little Drolma and a squad leader that make for a lively, humorous scene. Singing is woven together with spoken lines, a lead voice and a chorus, and the piece wins its audience with a brisk rhythm and a bustling stage. The song of the same name won several prizes at the Third All-Army Arts Festival and spread widely afterwards. In June 2026 the Tibet Autonomous Region Song and Dance Troupe staged a musical, Singing the Laundry Song Again, built around it.
