Reminiscences of Yunnan
A zhongruan concerto in three movements
In a courtyard shaded by banana plants and bamboo, two men sit on a stone bench in dappled sunlight. One plucks a round-bodied ruan, the other a long-necked sanxian, with an incense burner and a scroll on the table between them.
Introduction
A three-movement zhongruan concerto that Liu Xing completed in 1986 and finalised in 1997
Reminiscences of Yunnan is a concerto for zhongruan by Liu Xing, a composer who also plays the zhongruan and the yueqin. Liu studied the yueqin with Feng Shaoxian as a boy and graduated from the folk instrument department of the Shanghai Conservatory in 1982. The conductor Yan Huichang suggested that he cast the work as a concerto in three movements, and the score was completed in 1986. It was first performed in Beijing in 1987 at the first China Arts Festival, with Zhang Xinhua as soloist and Yan Huichang conducting the China National Traditional Orchestra. Liu revised it several times and fixed the final version in 1997. It is still heard in concert, and in 2023 the winner of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts concerto competition in Singapore played it as soloist with the academy's Chinese orchestra.
