On the small stage of a Yuan playhouse a female lead in plain clothes, a cangue on her neck, kneels at the centre and lifts her head to vow as white paper snowflakes begin to fall from above, with a drummer and a flute player at the side.

Qiannü's mother, because Wang Wenju has no official rank, refuses the marriage and has her daughter greet him as a brother. Wang says he will go to the capital for the examination, and the mother asks him to wait a few days. The first tune is Shang huashi.
