Peng Chufan, courtesy name Qingyun, also called Zefan, came from Echeng in Hubei. He joined the artillery of the Hubei New Army in 1906, went on to the military police school, and became a squad leader in the military police battalion. First a member of the Society for Daily Knowledge, he joined the Literary Society in 1911 and worked with the Common Advancement Society, his police post making him the natural go-between. When the rising's general staff was formed that September he was named one of its military planners. On the night of 9 October, after the Hankou base was exposed, he was arrested with Liu Fuji and others at the Xiaochaojie headquarters in Wuchang. Under interrogation he acknowledged being a revolutionary, and at dawn on 10 October he was beheaded with Liu Fuji and Yang Hongsheng outside the governor-general's office. The Wuchang rising began that evening, and the three became known collectively as "Peng-Liu-Yang".
