Uprising Leaders
Leaders who raised followers or troops against the court or regime of their day
47people
A mountain camp at night, with a beacon fire burning on a wooden platform at the upper left, several white tents on the slope and a red cloth tied to a rope; a wooden palisade with a gate stands at the right beyond a timber bridge over a rough river, under a clouded moon.
Uprising leaders are people who gathered followers or raised troops against the court or regime of their day: heads of peasant, refugee and secret-society risings, generals, regional governors and princes who rose in revolt, and organisers of risings in the late Qing. Their deeds are recorded in official histories, notebooks and local legend from differing standpoints, and the registry states what they did without praise or blame. They differ from commanders in rising against the court rather than leading troops on its orders, and from assassins and knights-errant in leading a group rather than acting alone.
