Yang Xuangan, eldest son of the Sui statesman Yang Su, came from Huayin in Hongnong; he inherited his father's title of Duke of Chu and rose to be minister of rites. Sensing that Emperor Yang distrusted his family, he waited for an opening. It came in 613, when the emperor marched again on Goguryeo and left him at Liyang in charge of grain transport: in the sixth month he rose in arms, took Li Mi as his chief strategist, and advanced on the eastern capital, Luoyang. The city held out, and when Yuwen Shu and Lai Hu'er brought their armies back he turned west toward the Guanzhong basin. Overtaken near Wenxiang in the eighth month and beaten again and again, he had his brother Yang Jishan kill him. The emperor ordered his corpse dismembered in the Luoyang market and hunted down his followers. Li Mi escaped and later joined the Wagang rebels, becoming one of the leading contenders as the Sui collapsed.
