Knight-errant / Assassin
Assassins and knights-errant recorded in the early histories
7people
On a moonlit night in a bamboo grove, a covered wooden bridge crosses a misty gorge with glowing lanterns hanging along it, and a small figure in a wide hat stands in the middle of the bridge; a cloak and a wine gourd hang on the railing in the foreground.
Assassins and knights-errant are people known from the histories for assassination or for the code of the knight-errant; the Records of the Grand Historian has a separate chapter of biographies for each. Their stories often turn on keeping faith, repaying a debt of gratitude and risking death for another, and they took on a legendary colour in retelling; later additions are marked as tradition, and the registry states what they did without praise or blame. They differ from uprising leaders in acting as individuals rather than raising a following.
