Liu Guoneng

Yan'an rebel known as Chuangtatian who surrendered to the Ming in 1638, rose to be a Ming deputy commander and was killed by Li Zicheng after refusing to change sides again

Also known as Hao Chuangtatian

Liu Guoneng came from Yan'an in Shaanxi and rose with Li Zicheng and Zhang Xianzhong in the early Chongzhen years, calling himself Chuangtatian, roughly Sky-Toppler. His band raided from Shanxi to Sichuan. At odds with Zhang Xianzhong and beaten by Zuo Liangyu, he was the first to surrender to the pacification commissioner Xiong Wencan, at Suizhou in the first month of 1638. Made a garrison officer under Zuo Liangyu, he fought loyally, was promoted to deputy commander and persuaded the rebel Li Wanqing to surrender, and the two were set to guard Yunyang before Liu was moved to Ye county. When Li Zicheng stormed Ye and captured him, Li reminded him that they had once been sworn brothers and urged him to come over; Liu replied that he was now the emperor's servant and would not join rebels, and he was killed. The court made him a posthumous chief commander and built a shrine to him.
