Commanders are the generals who led armies and directed operations. They decided deployment, advance and retreat in campaigns, and are recorded mainly in the biographies of the standard histories and in campaign accounts. They differ from strategists in commanding troops directly, and from frontier generals and naval commanders in not being defined by border defence or war on water.
