Pang Juan

Wei general who had his fellow student Sun Bin mutilated out of jealousy and killed himself when Sun Bin's ambush destroyed his army at Maling

The Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji) says that Pang Juan, a Wei general, had studied military arts with Sun Bin, and that as general to King Hui of Wei, knowing Sun to be the abler man, he lured him to Wei, had his feet cut off and his face tattooed on a false charge; Sun was later smuggled to Qi by its envoy. When Wei and Zhao attacked Han, Qi sent Tian Ji straight at the Wei capital Daliang, and Pang Juan turned back to save it. Sun Bin cut the number of cooking fires day by day to feign desertions, and Pang Juan raced ahead with light troops into the Maling defile at dusk, where he lit a torch to read words carved on a tree, Pang Juan dies beneath this tree, and Qi crossbowmen loosed together. Seeing his defeat, he cut his own throat. The Shiji chronicle of Wei says instead that Qi killed him and captured the Wei heir Shen.
