Frontier generals are commanders who were stationed on the borders for long periods and responsible for their defence. Their main deeds are organising frontier defences, building forts and fortified passes and resisting incursions, recorded in the standard histories and in border memorials. They differ from commanders in being defined by holding the frontier rather than leading large field armies.
