Naval commanders led fleets and warships and were responsible for fighting, patrol and escort on rivers, lakes and the sea. Their deeds are recorded mostly in accounts of naval battles and of river and coastal defence. They differ from commanders and frontier generals in that their main field was the water and their strength lay in ships and naval forces.
