Qin and Zhao fought a brutal contest for the strategic Shangdang region, with both states staking their entire national resources in a two-year war of attrition. Zhao's finances stood on the brink of collapse.

Warring States general of Zhao and son of renowned commander Zhao She. While well-versed in military theory, he lacked practical battlefield adaptability. Appointed to replace Lian Po during the Battle of Changping (260 BCE), he was lured into an encirclement by Qin general Bai Qi and killed in action, becoming a cautionary symbol in Chinese history.
