Mural of the event “Hou Jing Rebellion”, which this person took part in.
In 548 the Eastern Wei defector Hou Jing rose against Liang at Shouyang, crossed the Yangtze at Caishi and besieged Taicheng, the palace city of Jiankang. Taicheng fell the next year and Emperor Wu died under his control; the war lasted until Hou Jing's defeat in 552 and left Jiankang and the Sanwu region in ruins.
Also known as Zi Wanjing · self-proclaimed Emperor of Han
Hou Jing, courtesy name Wanjing, came from the Huaishuo garrison of the Northern Wei and was of Jie descent. He served Erzhu Rong and then Gao Huan of the Eastern Wei, holding the lands south of the Yellow River. After Gao Huan's death he defected to the Liang in 547, but rebelled from Shouyang the next year and in 549 stormed the palace city of Jiankang, where Emperor Wu of Liang starved to death. He set up puppet emperors, declared himself Emperor of Han in 551, and was killed by his own men in 552 after defeat by Wang Sengbian and Chen Baxian. Yu Xin's Lament for the South mourns the devastation he caused.
