Wang Sengbian, courtesy name Juncai, came from Qi in Taiyuan and was the son of the general Wang Shennian, with whom he crossed from Northern Wei to Liang. A long-serving commander under Xiao Yi, he held Baling in 551 and broke Hou Jing's westward offensive, then in 552 joined Chen Baxian in a drive down the Yangtze that routed Hou Jing at Jiankang and recovered the capital. After Jiangling fell, he yielded to Northern Qi pressure and installed Xiao Yuanming as emperor, which turned Chen Baxian against him; Chen killed him in a surprise attack in 555. He was the chief general in suppressing the rebellion.
