Chen Sheng
Leader of the first rising against Qin, begun with Wu Guang at Daze village in 209 BCE
Mural of the event “Dazexiang Uprising”, which this person took part in.
The Qin penal code was severe and cruel, and years of vast labor conscription crushed every breathing space of common life. The seed of rebellion was quietly germinating before the storm.
Also known as Chen She · King Yin
Chen Sheng, courtesy name She, came from Yangcheng, whose location is disputed. In 209 BCE, the first year of the Second Emperor of Qin, he and Wu Guang led a band of conscripts in a rising at Daze village, the first revolt against Qin; after taking Chen county he declared himself king of a state named Zhang Chu. In 208 BCE his driver Zhuang Jia killed him at Xiachengfu. He was buried at Dang and given the posthumous title King Yin. The source is the Records of the Grand Historian.
