Gao E
Qing Scholar and Co-Editor of the 120-Chapter Dream of the Red Chamber
In a study at night, a desk holds a brush pot, a porcelain vase with a plum branch, a lit red lantern, a folded fan and an unrolled blank scroll, with no one seated there, while through a round window the moon rises over a lake with a sailboat.

Gao E, courtesy name Yunshi, with the sobriquets Qiufu and Lanshu, was a Qing scholar. He passed the jinshi examination in 1795 and served as secretary in the Grand Secretariat, reader, censor for the Jiangnan circuit and supervising secretary in the Office of Scrutiny for Punishments. With Cheng Weiyuan he edited and printed the 120-chapter Dream of the Red Chamber in 1791 and 1792, the Cheng-Gao editions. The authorship of the last forty chapters is disputed: Hu Shi and others saw them as Gao's continuation, while other scholars think he only edited and patched existing manuscripts.
