Feng Dayou
Southern Song painter from Suzhou known for lotuses, to whom the album leaf Lotuses in the Wind at Taiye Pond is ascribed
A desk holds an unrolled sheet bearing three bold black ink strokes, with a rack of many brushes above it, a stone ink slab and ink stick, a porcelain bowl, a red lacquer box, a dish of red seal paste and a paperweight; a small seated figure shows through a round window onto bamboo.
Also known as Hao Yizhai
Feng Dayou, styled Yizhai, came from Wujun, today's Suzhou, and held the modest civil rank of chengshilang under the Southern Song. Painting histories say he excelled at lotuses and could show them in wind or sun, young or fading. His dates are unknown and almost nothing by him survives. The one leaf linked to his name, Lotuses in the Wind at Taiye Pond, is the ninth leaf of the album Collected Paintings of the Song and Yuan in the National Palace Museum in Taipei; it bears no signature and is ascribed to him by the mounting label. The leaf is recorded in the Shiqu baoji supplement and the museum's catalogue.
