Liu Tong, courtesy name Tongren, sobriquet Ge'an, came from Macheng in Huguang. He passed the Shuntian provincial examination in 1633 and the metropolitan examination in 1634, and after a probation at the Ministry of Personnel he was appointed magistrate of Wu county in 1637, but died at Yangzhou on his way to the post. With Yu Yizheng, a licentiate of Wanping, he wrote the Dijing jingwu lue in eight juan: Yu gathered the facts and Liu shaped them into prose. Arranged by district, from the north, east, south and west of the city to the Western Hills and the capital region, it describes the gardens, temples, sights and festivals of Beijing in a spare, angular style close to the Jingling school.
