Yu Huai

Writer of the Ming–Qing transition, raised in Nanjing, who refused Qing office and in old age wrote Banqiao Zaji on old Qinhuai.

Also known as Zi Danxin · Hao Manweng · Manchi Laoren

Yu Huai, styled Danxin and known as Manweng, had ancestral roots in Putian, Fujian, but was born in Nanjing. Before 1644 he served as an aide in a Nanjing office and was ranked with Du Jun and Bai Mengnai. After the Qing conquest he withdrew to Qiantang and never served the new dynasty, later living in Suzhou. His Banqiao Zaji, in three juan, recalls the courtesans, people and customs of the old Qinhuai pleasure quarter, including shifan drumming, and is a key source on late Ming Jiangnan music and urban life.
