Li Zufen

Also known as Hao Fangyuan

Li Zufen, known as Fangyuan, came from Pinghu, Zhejiang, and inherited the pipa from four generations of his family; he is regarded as the master who consolidated the Pinghu school. Building on old pieces and folk tunes, he systematised fingering and enlarged the repertoire, publishing in 1895 the New Pipa Scores of Thirteen Great Suites of the Southern and Northern Schools. It includes Xunyang Pipa (Xiyang Xiaogu, later arranged as Spring River Flower Moon Night). The tradition passed through Zhu Xingjing and Yang Shaoyi into modern pipa playing.
