Yang Bin

Early Qing scholar from Shanyin whose Liubian Jilue, written after visiting his exiled father, holds an early record of yangge performed on the Lantern Festival at Ningguta.

Also known as Zi Keshi · Hao Gengfu · Hao Dapiao Shanren

Yang Bin, courtesy name Keshi, of Shanyin (modern Shaoxing), Zhejiang, travelled beyond the passes along the Willow Palisade to visit his father Yang Yue, exiled to Ningguta in 1662. From what he saw he wrote the Liubian Jilue, one of the first detailed accounts of the northeast's geography, customs and frontier institutions. It records that on Lantern Festival night at Ningguta enthusiasts put on yangge, boys dressed as women and dancers striking short wooden sticks to gongs and drums, an early document of northeastern yangge. His other works include Jinshi Yuanliu and Dapiao Oubi.
