Hua Guangsheng

Qing compiler from Licheng, Shandong, whose four-volume Baixue Yiyin gathers hundreds of popular tunes, above all matou diao, and is a key source for Qing folk song.

Also known as Zi Chuntian

Hua Guangsheng, styled Chuntian, came from Licheng in Shandong and lived roughly in the Qianlong and Jiaqing reigns; little else is known of him. He collected the popular song tunes of his day into the four-volume Baixue Yiyin, dominated by matou diao songs but also including jiandianhua, bajiaogu and nanci pieces, mostly on love and street life, with nine chapters of the tanci Yu Qingting appended to volume four. Prefaces include one by Gao Wende dated 1799 and Hua's own of 1804; the book was first printed in 1829 and remains a major source for Qing folk song.
