Yan Zide was a singing master of the Qianlong era, usually identified as a teacher at the Sanhe Hall in Tianjin; his dates are unknown. According to Wang Tingshao's preface of 1795, the lyrics of Nichang xupu came from the songs Yan Zide taught and sang, which were copied out by others; his circle pooled money to print them and asked Wang to correct the many errors. The eight-chapter collection gathers popular songs in about thirty tune types, among them xidiao, chaqu and matou diao, with an appended suite for an imperial birthday, and is a key source for mid-Qing popular song in Beijing and Tianjin.
