In a study at night, a desk holds a brush pot, a porcelain vase with a plum branch, a lit red lantern, a folded fan and an unrolled blank scroll, with no one seated there, while through a round window the moon rises over a lake with a sailboat.

Ma Dai, courtesy name Yuchen, was a late Tang poet who passed the jinshi in the Huichang era. In 847 he was summoned as secretary by the Taiyuan commander Li, was later demoted to county lieutenant of Longyang, and was finally made Erudite of the Imperial Academy. He died in 869. A master of five-character regulated verse in a spare, clear style, he is remembered for Autumn at Bashang and Thoughts at the Chu River; his collection is the Huichang Jinshi Shiji with a supplement.
