In a study at night, a desk holds a brush pot, a porcelain vase with a plum branch, a lit red lantern, a folded fan and an unrolled blank scroll, with no one seated there, while through a round window the moon rises over a lake with a sailboat.
Fan Junhong (1916–1986) was a Peking opera dramatist. In 1959 he and Lu Ruiming took the Yangzhou opera A Centenarian Takes Command as their base, drew also on the Yang family story The Twelve Widows March West, and adapted them into the Peking opera Women Generals of the Yang Family, in which, after Yang Zongbao is killed, the more than hundred-year-old She Taijun takes command and leads the women of the Yang family to war.
