Partridges on the Jiangnan dizi
As the sun sets over a river, a man seated on a stool beneath a willow plays a transverse bamboo flute. A man in a covered boat listens quietly, an attendant stands holding a horse, and the water reflects the evening glow.
Introduction
A Hunan folk tune whose earliest printed score appeared in a 1926 anthology
Zhegu Fei (Partridges Flying) began as a folk tune from Hunan and became a signature piece of Jiangnan dizi playing. Its earliest printed score appeared in an anthology compiled in 1926. Lu Chunling, known as the Flute King, arranged it as a dizi solo and called it his favourite flute piece. The national intangible heritage website lists it among his representative works. The flautist Zhao Songting made another arrangement inspired by a poem of Li Bai.
