A Spray of Flowers
On the suona, sorrow turns to joy
On a snowy village road, two musicians lead a procession playing suona horns, followed by players of a sheng, a drum and cymbals. Bearers in red carry a red sedan chair behind them, beside white, snow-covered fields.
Introduction
A suona solo Ren Tongxiang built from the crying tune of Shandong bangzi opera and local folk melodies
Yi Zhi Hua (A Spray of Flowers) is a suona solo created by Ren Tongxiang from Shandong opera and folk melodies. It has three sections: a free-tempo introduction, a moderate middle section and a fast finale. The introduction borrows the crying tune of Shandong bangzi opera, the middle section reworks the Shandong folk tune Shi Yang Jing, and the finale improvises on fragments of the tune Xiao Tao Hong. The piece dates from the 1950s, although sources differ on the exact year. Recordings of it have circulated both in China and abroad.
