Ordos Dance
Jia Zuoguang's Mongolian group dance
On an autumn grassland, dancers in colorful long robes and boots hold white and blue scarves as they circle together. Round felt tents and horses stand in the distance, with low mountains and red-leaved shrubs beyond.
Introduction
A group dance Jia Zuoguang made in 1953, which won an award at the 1955 Warsaw festival
Ordos Dance is a Mongolian group dance of about four minutes, created in 1953 by the choreographer Jia Zuoguang. It was performed at the Fifth World Festival of Youth and Students in Warsaw in July and August 1955 and won an award there. A poster printed in 1957 shows the scene, with a Mongolian dance troupe called back for repeated bows after dancing the prize-winning piece. The poster's designer had also attended that festival. Jia Zuoguang, a Manchu dancer who lived from 1923 to 2017, was hailed as the dance god of the East and received a lifetime achievement award from the Chinese arts awards in 2011.
