Zou Yang
Western Han literary master and prose stylist (206 BCE–129 BCE), famed for 'Memorial from Prison to the Prince of Liang' which averted execution through brilliant rhetoric.
In a study at night, a desk holds a brush pot, a porcelain vase with a plum branch, a lit red lantern, a folded fan and an unrolled blank scroll, with no one seated there, while through a round window the moon rises over a lake with a sailboat.
Also known as Master Zou
Zou Yang (206 BCE–129 BCE) was a master of Western Han argumentative prose. Falsely imprisoned in Liang under capital charges through court slander, he composed the immortal 'Memorial from Prison to the Prince of Liang', eloquently demonstrating historical patterns of loyalty and vindication, moving the Prince to release and honor him.
