Hua Qiuping, personal name Wenbin, styled Boya, came from Dangkou in Wuxi, Jiangsu, and was a seal carver and musician skilled on the pipa and qin. In 1818, with his younger brother Hua Wengui and others, he collated pieces of the southern and northern pipa traditions into the three-juan Pipa Pu, printed the following year. Containing large suites such as Haiqing Na Tian'e and Yue'er Gao and an early version of Ambush from Ten Sides, it is the earliest formally printed pipa collection, and its notation shaped later scores; his line is called the Wuxi school.
