Xiao Mingxing, born Deng Xiaolian in 1913 to a family from Sanshui, Guangdong, grew up in the Youlanmen quarter of Guangzhou. She studied with Liang Yizhong and others and sang Cantonese songs in the pinghou natural voice; the lyricist Wang Xinfan gave her the name Deng Manwei and wrote her first song, Chi Yun. Her delicate, restrained and deeply felt delivery became a school of its own, the Xing style, and she was ranked with Xu Liuxian, Zhang Yue'er and Zhang Huifang among the Four Heavenly Kings of pinghou. Her signature songs include Chi Yun, Qiu Fen, Fengliu Meng, Yeban Gesheng and Zhiyin Hechu. On 24 August 1942 she collapsed on stage while singing Qiu Fen and died in Guangzhou the next day.
