Cao Qiang, from Pingyao, Shanxi, was born in 1937. At twenty-one he joined the Taiyuan Quyi Federation as a xiangsheng performer, and in the early 1960s he studied with the veteran lianhualuo singer Li Liangen and set about collecting the nearly lost Jinzhong luozi. Reworking its tunes, lines and metres and mixing Taiyuan dialect with Mandarin, he developed it into Taiyuan lianhualuo. He wrote more than two hundred pieces, mostly on everyday life, including Dongdong Xianbao, Ligan Jianying and Da Penti, and formally took nine pupils. He died on 25 February 2014.
