He Yungen, known on stage as He Baobao, was born in Shaoxing County, Zhejiang, in August 1942. He took up Shaoxing xuanjuan, the sung recitation of precious scrolls, at about twenty as the last pupil of Chen Asong, and from 1977 made it his profession, with clear diction and a plain, natural style. He regularly performed more than forty scrolls, Guadeng above all, collected over thirty manuscript scrolls, formed the Dahe troupe and taught more than twenty apprentices, performing in Hangzhou, Shaoxing and beyond. He was a national representative bearer of Shaoxing xuanjuan and died in December 2018.
