Long Ziming, a Dong from Xinhuang, Hunan, was born in 1914 and learned the Dong nuo theatre dongdongtui from his father Long Jixiang. Performed at Tianjingzhai in Gongxi, the masked play takes its name from the drum and small gong to whose beat the actors leap. Over more than eighty years on stage, specialising in heroic roles, he kept all twenty-eight traditional plays intact and trained over a hundred performers; in his nineties he still performed in a mask and explained the form to visiting scholars. He was a national representative transmitter of Dong nuo theatre and died in 2011.
