Zhu Yu

Northern Song writer from Wucheng in Huzhou and son of Zhu Fu, author of Pingzhou Ketan, which records Guangzhou's maritime trade office and ships' use of the compass.

Also known as Zi Wuhuo

Zhu Yu, courtesy name Wuhuo, came from Wucheng in Huzhou and was a son of the Northern Song official Zhu Fu. His dates of birth and death are unknown. He went to Guangzhou in the early Chongning years, and what he saw there later went into Pingzhou Ketan. The book was completed in 1119 in three volumes; its second volume mostly deals with Guangzhou's maritime trade office, and it notes that ships steered by the compass in dark weather. The original is largely lost, and the present text was gathered by Qing editors from the Yongle Encyclopedia and other works.
